Northern Sri Lanka Still in Fierce Fighting

Colombo : Fierce fighting in Sri Lanka turbulent northern territory have killed and wounded over 100 Tamil rebels and government soldiers.

According a military communiqué realesed here Thursday, some 45 separatist and 10 soldiers died in clashes during the last 24 hours.

Battles took place in the districts of Vavuniya, Jaffna, Welioya y Mannar, where 30 rebels and 23 soldiers were also wounded.

Separatists are fighting since July 1983 for the independence of the northern and eastern part of the island located in Indian Ocean where the Tamil ethnic are majority.

Over 75,000 people, among civilians, rebels and soldiers have died over the last 25 years of conflict.
