Moscow : Discrepancies between Russia and the West have reached a serious level due to old, unresolved problems challenging the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) geo-policy with Moscow interests.
The NATO Summit taking place in Bucharest has brought to the table discussions over such topics as Kosovo, the bloc’s enlargement towards the east, Afghanistan, and the future of the Conventional Forces in Europe Treaty (CFE).
Those and other thorny issues of international relations and the regional security system are the apple of discord between Moscow and NATO, and with the US on the sideline.
In the meantime, Russian President Vladimir Putin today left for Bucharest to attend the Russia-NATO Council on Friday.
Russia is attending the bilateral meeting with a strong rejection of NATO advance in the Euro-Asian geography, mainly the desired inclusion of Ukraine and Georgia to the bloc.
Putin’s announced visit is arousing wide-ranging commentaries and stories both in the Russian and foreign press.
What is evident is that Putin will exert pressure against the projected plans for NATO enlargement towards the east, to the detriment of Russian interests.
