New York : The United Nations Convention on the Rights of persons with disabilities will go into force next moth, as it has been ratified by 20 countries including United Arab Emirates.
The convention will ensure equal rights to 650 million disabled people across the world.
Ecuador became the 20th country to ratify the convention on Thursday, giving the UN the necessary authority to put it into force 30 days after the ratification.
The convention makes it mandatory to ensure equal rights to the disabled people in work, education and social, political and economic life.
In a statement issued on Thursday evening, U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon described the day when the convention will go into force, as ‘a historic moment’.
Ban Ki-Moon said that the convention will be “a powerful tool to eradicate the obstacles faced by persons with disabilities: discrimination, segregation from society, economic marginalization, and lack of opportunities for participation in social, political and economic decision-making processes.” Among the192 U.N. member states, 126 have signed the convention so far.
