Cairo : Lebanese Prime Minister Fouad Seniora arrived here Saturday evening on a visit to seek Egypt’s support to help resolve the current political stalemate in Lebanon.
Upon arrival, Seniora said he would hold talks with Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak and a number of top officials on the latest developments in Lebanon, Egypt’s official MENA news agency reported.
The talks here will also take up a Lebanese request to hold an Arab foreign ministers’ meeting to discuss means to improve Lebanon’s relations with its neighbor Syria, he said.
On Lebanon’s boycott to the recent Arab Summit in Damascus, Seniora said “We wanted to express our opinion that there is a crisis in Lebanon representing in the inability to elect a president of the republic because of pressures being put on Lebanon.”
Meanwhile, Seniora reiterated his support for a three-point Arab initiative to solve the Lebanese crisis, saying “We still believe that this initiative should be implemented.”
On Jan. 6, the 22-member Arab League endorsed the Arab initiative in Cairo, calling for the immediate election of Army commander Michel Suleiman as president, formation of a national unity government and adoption of a new election law.
Lebanon is currently facing the most serious political deadlock since the end of 1975-1990 civil war. For the first time in its history, the presidential seat has been vacant since Nov. 24 of2007 when former President Emile Lahoud stepped down.
A parliamentary session to elect a new president has been postponed for 17 times as the ruling parliament majority, led by Saad Hariri, and the Hezbollah-led opposition cannot reconcile their disputes over the build-up of a future government despite Arab efforts to resolve the crisis.
