Dhaka : Bangladeshi artistes Khalid Mahmud Mithu and Kanak Champa Chakma have been invited to the Beijing Olympic festival to exhibit their sports paintings.

The paintings were chosen through an open competition at Beijing where artists from 70 countries sent their entries. An international jury made the final selection, The Daily Star said Saturday.

The subject was the Olympic spirit and rainbow colours. From July 7 artists, art critiques and curators will congregate in Beijing and attend seminars and meetings.

Mithu’s paintings are called “Speed”. Every sportsperson tries to win for his/her country and this feeling is depicted in the paintings which show the lower limbs and muscles of the sportspersons.

Another picture deals with the speed inherent in a bicycle race, with the participants wearing multicoloured jerseys.

Kanak’s painting is called “Target”. It has a yellow background and shows how an indigenous man aims at the target. Many arrows evolve from one. This is also linked with the archery event in the Olympics.

Kanak’s painting is in acrylic and has myriad textures in it to express the element of power with chrome yellow, white and black.

Mithu and Kanak, a Buddhist tribal, will be reading papers at the event.
