Srinagar : With rain and snow lashing Kashmir for the past two days, people here are retrieving the woollens that they had packed away after fairly warm weather in March.
“Although the minimum temperature was 6.8 degrees Celsius today, the snowfall in the higher reaches and continuous rains for the last two days have added to the chill factor which gives one this feeling of cold,” T.K. Jotshi, assistant director of the meteorological office here, said Tuesday.
Jotshi added that the north Kashmir border district of Kupwara had received 20.3 mm of rain since Monday.
The valley saw fairly warm weather last month and people had packed their woollen clothes hoping to bask in the spring sunshine.
“In fact, we had almost no rainfall here during the month of March which is otherwise the wettest season in Kashmir,” Jotshi said.
Now, after fresh snowfall in Sonamarg, Pahalgam and other places in the higher Himalayas here, people are back to wearing their traditional tweed over-garments called Pherens.
“The Pheren comes handy in a situation like this. There is no better and more comfortable attire,” said Muzaffar Ahmad, a college professor.
