Montevideo : Uruguayan President Tabare Vazquez requested the United Status declassify files related to a political murder occurred in this capital in 1978 and missing people during the 1973-1985 military dictatorship.
The request is already in hands of President George W. Bush, “La Republica” newspaper reported Monday, citing Foreign Minister Gonzalo Fernandez.
One of the demands has to do with the death of Cecilia Fontana de Heber, an incident that, according to the daily’s investigations, involved the former National Information and Intelligence Direction and extreme right groups, supported by the CIA and the US embassy in this capital.
On September 5, 1978, the wife of nationalist leader Mario Heber collapsed after drinking white wine from one of the three bottles sent anonymously to Heber and her fellows Luis Alberto Lacalle and Carlos Julio Pereyra.
The National Security Council was in session that day, amid rumors that soldiers would substitute de facto president Aparicio Alvarez with a trio composed of Army chief Gregorio Alvarez and two representatives from traditional parties.
The US Department State was not interested in ending dictatorial regimes of the Latin American Southern Cone. One of the National Party groups, among them Heber, Lacalle and Pereyra, advocated for ending the dictatorship.
Vazquez’ request took place after a US denial to declassify the case with the pretext that that implies the CIA’s “sources and methods,” actions, agents and paid informers.
The statesman also request from Washington documentation related to the disappearance of dozens of dissenters in the dictatorial period, as part of the Condor Operation, which according to studies was supported and financed by United States.
