Ahmedabad : A special team appointed by the Supreme Court has visited one of Ahmedabad’s worst hit areas in the 2002 communal violence where former Congress MP Ehsan Jaffri was among 39 people burnt to death.
The Special Investigation Team (SIT) spent about three hours at the Gulbarg housing society area here Tuesday. This is one of 10 places assigned to the team to find out what really happened during the sectarian killings.
The five-member team led by former Central Bureau of Investigation director R.K. Raghavan visited the house of Jaffri, who desperately tried to save himself and his neighbours from a frenzied mob but failed.
Jaffri was among the larger number killed in the communal violence that swept Ahmedabad and other parts of Gujarat from February 2002 after a mob set fire to a train coach at Godhra station killing 59 Hindus.
Raghavan and his colleagues also visited Naroda and Naroda Patia, which too saw large-scale killings.
The SIT was constituted last month when Supreme Court judges Arijit Pasayat, P. Sathasivam and Aftab Alam disposed off petitions from the National Human Rights Commission, rights groups and individuals affected by the 2002 violence.
The team has to complete its task within three months and submit its report to the Supreme Court.
Assisting Raghavan are Gujarat Indian Police Service officers Geetha Johri, Shivanand Jha and Ashish Bhatia and former Uttar Pradesh director general of police C.B. Satpathy.
