Brussels : The European Parliament condemned here today the repression by the Chinese security forces in Tibet and demanded an independent inquiry.
In a resolution on Tibet adopted by 580 votes to 24 with 45 abstentions, the EP called for “an open and independent inquiry into the recent riots and repression in Tibet under the auspices of the UN”. The resolution called on the EU to strive for a common position with regard to the attendance of EU leader at the Olympic Games opening ceremony, with the option of non-attendance in the event that there is no resumption of dialogue between China and Tibetan spiritual leader Dalai Lama .
It called for the appointment a special EU envoy for Tibetan issues to facilitate dialogue between the two sides.
The EP urged China “not to misuse the 2008 Olympic Games by arresting dissidents, journalists and human rights activists in order to prevent demonstrations.” The EP supported Dalai Lamas rejection of calls for Tibetan independence and backed his proposal of “genuine cultural and political autonomy, and religious freedom”.
The EP held a debate on Tibet on 26 March, which paved the way for today’s resolution.
