Washington : Indian ambassador to the US Ronen Sen has expressed his deep distress at the death of veteran journalist Gopal Raju, who was awarded the Pravasi Bharatiya Samman in 2007 for his work in the US.

“I am deeply distressed to learn of the sad demise” of Raju, the ambassador said in a condolence message Thursday “to his family and to his many friends, colleagues and admirers”.

“He had several accomplishments to his credit as a veteran journalist with impeccable credentials. Besides being the founder of the India Abroad newspaper and IANS news service, he was also associated with three other New York-based newsweeklies,” he said.

“Raju was also active in community service,” Sen said, noting that he founded the Indian American Centre for Political Awareness (IACPA) to bring political awareness among the younger generation of Indian Americans.

“In recognition of his multi-faceted and exemplary contributions, he had been conferred with the Pravasi Bharatiya Samman award in 2007,” the envoy recalled.
