Kabul : Eight civilians were killed and 20 injured on Thursday in a suicide attack on a NATO convoy in Afghanistan’s southern city of Kandahar, an interior ministry source told RIA Novosti.
The suicide bomber, who was in a vehicle, blew himself up as a military convoy carrying Canadian troops passed by.
The blast caused serious damage to nearby shops.
No terrorist group has claimed responsibility for the attack so far.
After a traditional winter lull, Taliban fighters said they would step up attacks against Afghan and foreign troops as part of their aim to topple the country’s pro-Western government.
In 2007 Taliban militants launched over 140 suicide attacks, the highest number since 2001 when the radical movement was ousted from power during a U.S.-led invasion.
Terrorist attacks and shootouts in Afghanistan have killed a total of 11,000 people in the past two years.
