Indian President embarks on three-nation state visit from Saturday

New Delhi : India’s first woman President, Pratibha Devisingh Patil will embark on a three-nation state visit to Brazil, Mexico and Chile from April 12 to 25, 2008.

This is her maiden visit since assuming the office of President.

The Brazil leg of her visit shall be from April 13 to 16 in which she shall visit Sao Paulo, Rio de Janeiro and Brasilia, said an official release issued here Friday.

Patil will be in Mexico from April 16 to 20, where she will travel to Mexico city and Guadalajara.

Her visit to Mexico would be the first by an Indian President in over two decades.

Late President Zail Singh visited Mexico in 1984.

Mexican President Felipe Calderon visited India from September 10 to 12, 2007.

Calderon’s was the first visit to India by a Mexican President in 22 years, after Miguel de la Madrid Hurtado visited the country in 1985.

The President shall visit Santiago in Chile from April 20 to April 23.

In Chile, the President will hold talks with Michelle Bachelet, Chile’s first woman to be elected President.

Bachelet assumed office on March 11, 2006.

Earlier, she was minister of defence in Chile, the first woman in Chile or all of Latin America to serve as a minister of defence.

Late Shankar Dayal Sharma was the last Indian President to visit Chile, in the ’90s.

The President will return to New Delhi on April 25, 2008.
