Four civilians among eight dead in Afghan violence

Kabul : Eight police officers were killed by Taliban, in two separate attacks in southern Afghanistan, the Afghan police reported on Sunday.

The attacks were carried out in Kandahar, southern Afghan province also known as the spiritual capital of Taliban and Helmand.

Kandahar police chief Sayed Aqa Saqib told journalists that four policemen were killed when they came under attack from Taliban while they were busy destroying poppy crop in Mewand district.

The second attack was carried out in Grishk district of the neighboring Helmand province, where the militants ambushed a police patrol on Saturday night. Four other policemen suffered injuries in the attack.

Meanwhile, three Afghan civilians were killed and as many wounded in a landmine blast in southeastern Afghanistan on Sunday.

Local police officials said the blast took place in Nadir Shah Kot district of Khost province. The injured civilians were transported to a hospital for treatment. The attack has not been claimed yet.
