Iran plays constructive role in Basra tension

Damascus : Head of an Iranian delegation to the Conference of Joint Security Cooperation and Coordination Committee of Iraq’s Neighboring Countries said here Sunday that Iran played a constructive role in resolving the recent crisis in Basra, southern Iraq.

Mohammad-Jalal Firouznia made the remark on the sidelines of the one-day conference in Damascus, adding that Iran supports the Iraqi government in establishing security and stability in the war-stricken country.

Firouznia, who is also director general of the Foreign Ministry for Persian Gulf Affairs, further said that the US is responsible for the crises in Iraq, particularly in Basra, and called for the withdrawal of occupying forces from the country.

Referring to the relations between Iranian and Iraqi government, he noted that Tehran and Baghdad have satisfactory ties, and that Iran is ready to cooperate with Iraqi government in all fields to help the Muslim nation.

The second round of the aforementioned committee opened in Damascus with a speech by Syrian interior minister.
