Chennai : Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi Sunday welcomed the Chennai edition of the Times of India that hits the newsstands Monday.

“It is indeed praiseworthy that the Times of India, in print since 1838, will have an edition from Chennai from tomorrow (Monday). Its name has pleased my ears for a long time as it denotes nationhood,” Karunanidhi said at a simple function to mark the launch of the edition.

He ascended a specially constructed dais in a golf cart flanked by his cabinet colleague and state Electricity Minister Arcot N. Veerasamy and Chief Secretary L.K. Tripathy.

Recalling the words of late poet laureate Bharatidasan, the chief minister referred to the newspaper as “the source of light (to dispel) darkness”.
