Kabul : At least four policemen have been killed and seven wounded in a gunfight with Taliban insurgents in the southern Afghan province of Helmand, an official said Sunday.
The insurgents ambushed the police patrol at a market place in Gereshk district Saturday, district police chief Khil Mohammad Shuja said.
The gunfight lasted for an hour. The police have arrested two insurgents from the spot.
Meanwhile, Taliban spokesman Qari Yusuf Ahmadi has confirmed Saturday’s incident.
More than 380 people have been killed in terror-related violence in Afghanistan so far this year.
Taliban insurgents have vowed recently to launch a “spring offensive” to intensify their guerrilla-style attacks on the national army and foreign troops.
