New Delhi : Parliament proceedings could become smoother from Wednesday with the opposition parties, including the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), inclined to shun disrupting the house any more on issues like rising prices.
The two houses had to be adjourned for the whole day Tuesday when parliament met for the first day of the post-recess budget session. The opposition, Left parties and others like the Samajwadi Party (SP) repeatedly disrupted the proceedings.
BJP parliamentary party spokesman Vijay Kumar Malhotra conceded informally, “We cannot stall the house every day.”
The BJP had moved an adjournment motion in the Lok Sabha seeking to stall the Question Hour and all official business to discuss the spiralling inflation. The government is reluctant to accept an adjournment motion though it is willing for a discussion.
In the meeting of the Business Advisory Committee (BAC) held under Speaker Somnath Chatterjee’s chairmanship Tuesday, the government suggested a discussion under Rule 193, which does not require a division.
Malhotra avoided a direct reply when asked about it, and said: “Any decision will be taken only by our parliamentary party, which meets tomorrow morning.”
However, sources indicated that since parties across the board are keen on a discussion rather than disruption of the house, they could agree to discuss the current price rise under Rule 193.
