Dhaka : At least 17 people were killed and 21 others were injured in a collision between a express train and a passenger bus early Wednesday morning in Bangladesh’s Tangail district, about 80 km northwest of capital Dhaka, according to an official.
Deputy Commissioner of Tangail Akhter Ali Sarker, chief executive of the district, confirmed to Xinhua on the phone at the scene that 17 persons were killed in the accident.
He said that the accident occurred at a level-crossing of railway, maybe the gateman was sleeping for which he did not block the level-crossing. The bus was hit by the train at about 03:10 a.m. local time on Wednesday morning.
Sarker said four critically wounded passengers have been sent to hospitals in the capital and others are getting treatment in different hospitals and clinics in Tangail.
He also said that police and army are working at the scene and the road is now clear for movement of trains and vehicles.
The private television ATN in its breaking news said on Wednesday morning that 20 people were killed and 40 others were wounded.
