New Delhi : The bodies of two Indian engineers, killed in a suicide bomb attack by rebels on their convoy in Afghanistan, will be flown in to the capital New Delhi Wednesday morning.
Officials in the ministry of external affairs (MEA) said the bodies would be brought on a flight of a private Afghanistan airlines, Kam Air, and would reach Delhi airport at 8.30 a.m.
On Saturday morning, two suicide bombers blew up the convoy of a road construction team, killing the two Indian engineers and injuring five in Nimroz province of southwestern Afghanistan. A Taliban spokesperson later claimed responsibility for the attack.
A third Taliban accomplice, injured in the incident, was arrested by Afghan security personnel.
The bodies of the engineers, M.P. Singh and C. Govindaswamy, were airlifted to Zaranj and then taken to Kabul.
The Indian workers were in Afghanistan to construct a strategic road linking Afghanistan’s highways to the Iranian border.
The MEA strongly condemned the attack, which is “aimed at India’s aid and humanitarian programme in Afghanistan”, but reiterated New Delhi’s “determination to continue to work with the Afghan people and government for the rehabilitation and reconstruction” of the war-ravaged country.
Nearly 4,000 Indians are engaged in the construction of various infrastructure projects in Afghanistan. India has pledged $850 million for the reconstruction of the country, making New Delhi the fifth largest donor there.
