New Delhi : Six major airports in the country have a modern passenger information system, which will allow immigration authorities in India to get information about passengers coming into the country in a short span of time, the Press Trust of India (PTI) reported.
Under the Advanced passenger Information System (APIS), international airlines have to provide information about passengers and crew on board within 15 minutes of taking off for India.
Airlines are to provide details like complete name, nationality, passport number and visa particulars.
APIS have become operational from April 1 at airports in Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Hyderabad, Bangalore and Kochi, PTI quoted the sources, as saying.
The information received by the immigration authorities would enable expeditious clearance of the immigration formalities of passengers besides helping security agencies to match the profiles with the data base of terrorist and criminals.
Information would be shared by the immigration authorities of India with the counter part in US, Canada, Australia and China.
The sources said efforts have been made to make APIS operational soon in other international airports including Kolkata, Amritsar, Guwahati, Ahmedabad, Goa and Trivandrum.
