Do not be deceived by messages in candidate photo — academic

By Faisal Al-Shemmiri, KUNA,

Kuwait : An expert in interpreting gestures and body language Wednesday warned voters not to be deceived by the messages in the photos of National Assembly candidates.

Speaking to KUNA, Dr. Mona Ghareeb called voters to look into the political, social, and academic backgrounds of candidates, urging them not to rely on the “calculated” images the candidates use in their campaigns.

Most candidates use photos that give the voters an impression that they have the intellect, abilities, and characteristics to qualify them as parliament members, she said.

Studies showed that candidates who appear handsome and stylish in their photos get more sympathy and attention than others, she added.

She also said that using different hand gestures and positions aim to show that the candidate has a strong personality, while some facial expressions aim to show a serious charecter.

Photos showing laptops and other technology aim to show a candidate is up to date, while different clothing might aim to show that the candidate belongs to specific religious or social groups, Ghareeb added.

Candidates who use photos in which they appear in the company of sick or old people or of people with special needs meanwhile aim to show that they are aware of the needs of special groups in society, she further noted.
