Israel renews fuel supplies to Gaza

By Xinhua,

Jerusalem : Israel on Wednesday resumed the fuel supply to the Gaza Strip after a week-long cutoff.

A spokeswoman of Israel Defense Forces (IDF) confirmed to Xinhua that a total of eight truckloads of fuel have been shipped into Gaza through Nahal Oz fuel terminal.

The decision was made by Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak on Monday.

Hours earlier, three IDF soldiers were killed in exchanges of heavy gunfire with a group of Palestinian militants who approached the security fence near Kibbutz Be’eri.

Israel, Gaza’s sole fuel provider, suspended the fuel flow to the coast strip last week after several Palestinian militants infiltrated into the Nahal Oz fuel terminal and shot dead two Israeli civilians on April 9.

The suspension has impeded travel for the 1.4 million residents in the Gaza strip, with four main universities closed after officials said students could not get to class because of fuel shortages.
