UAE to get fast access to Interpol DNA database

By IANS,

Abu Dhabi : The United Arab Emirates (UAE) would become the first country in the Middle East to get fast access to the Interpol’s database of DNA profiles after it signs the Interpol DNA Charter, WAM news agency reported Friday.

“It will be very soon,” said Ahmed Abdullah al Marzouki, head of genetics section of the Abu Dhabi forensic science laboratory and a member of Monitoring Experts Group, the database’s oversight committee.

Although all Interpol members have access to its DNA database, countries that have signed the Interpol DNA Charter have immediate online access to the database, which allows law enforcement agencies to submit and check records in seconds through Interpol’s global police communications system.

The database contains information of genetic samples taken at crime scenes and from suspects in 186 countries.

Al Marzouki added that techniques in gathering DNA samples were improving all the time and the UAE was leading the Middle East in this field.

“It is in our interest to cooperate and share information on this subject. By working together, we are making it harder for criminals to escape international law,” he said.
