Srinagar : Five separatist militants, including two Pakistani nationals, were killed in two gunfights in north Kashmir’s Kupwara district where Indian security forces foiled an infiltration bid Saturday.

Police said troops of the 18 Rashtriya Rifles (RR) and the special operations group (SOG) of the Jammu and Kashmir police jointly surrounded a forest area in Jabdi Rang in Lolab of the border district on a specific information about the presence of a group of militants.

“As the security forces were busy in the forest search, hiding militants opened fire at the security forces. The fire was returned by the security forces, resulting in a fierce gunfight which ended late this afternoon in which four militants were killed,” a police spokesman here said.

He identified two of the slain militants as Jaish-e-Muhammad (JeM) district commander Amjad Bhai and Abu Saifullah of Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), both Pakistani nationals.

In another incident, the security forces foiled an infiltration bid on the Line of Control (LoC) in the Keran sector of Kupwara district killing one infiltrator.

“The operation in the area is still continuing,” the spokesman said.
