Power outage fails to dampen Eden Garden audience

By IANS,

Kolkata : A 20-minute power failure stopped the Indian Premier League (IPL) tie here right at a crucial juncture, but could not dampen the spirit of the capacity crowd at the Eden Gardens that continued to cheer for the Kolkata Knight Riders.

Just when the home team needed 22 runs off 22 balls, the match was suspended as floodlight from two of the four towers went off due to a cable fault in the generator room.

“There was a cable fault at the generator room beside the club office. Hence, two towers near the B-block at the gallery were put out. A team from Calcutta Electricity Supply Corporation (CESC) restored the power supply within 20 minutes,” Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) joint secretary Amitabha Bandopadyay told IANS.

“This is the first time in the history of Edens that such a thing happened. It’s embarrassing but it was not right that we concentrated only on the glamour part of the match and neglected the essentials,” he added.

The star power present at the stadium, however, did not fail as the home team owner and Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan continued to cheer up his team as well the audience.

Shah Rukh came down to the ground and started dancing along with his invited guests from the film fraternity till power supply to the floodlights was restored.
