Brussels : European Union foreign policy chief Javier Solana arrived in Kabul Monday on a one-day visit for talks with President of Afghanistan, Hamid Karzai, on the EU-Afghanistan ties and regional developments.
Solana’s spokesperson Cristina Gallach told reporters that his visit was taking place at an “important moment” for Afghanistan .
She pointed to the recent meeting of NATO leaders in Bucharest where Afghanistan dominated the discussions and to the upcoming Compact on Afghanistan to be held in Paris in June.
Solana will also discuss with Afghan officials the EU Police Mission launched in 2007. ‘Eupol Afghanistan’ consists of some 230 personnel to advise and train the top echelons of the interior ministry in policing and rule of law.
Solana’s visit to Kabul was not announced earlier due to security reasons.
On Tuesday, he will hold talks with Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf, Prime Minister Yusuf Raza Gilani and the leaders of the three main political parties in Islamabad.
Gallach noted that the dispatch of an EU election observation mission to monitor Pakistan’s elections in February has raised the EU profile in the country.
Solana will be the first EU leader to visit Pakistan following the February parliamentary polls.
Indo-Pakistan ties and the Kashmir issue are expected to be raised during Solana’s talks with Pakistani officials.
