Manama : US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice met in Bahrain with Arabian Foreign Affairs Ministers of the Persian Gulf and those of Egypt, Jordan and Iraq on Monday.
Rice, who will continue on to Kuwait to participate in an international conference of Iraq’s neighbors and the Group of 8, reportedly met with the foreign ministers to induce them to open embassies in Baghdad.
Saudi Arabia has been considering that idea since 2007, but Egypt, which ambassador was kidnapped and murdered in 2005, said it would not open any diplomatic mission until security improves, and only Kuwait accepted the proposal.
Washington’s strategy apparently responds to the need to convince world opinion and US taxpayers that the US Armed Forces have helped the government of Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al Maliki stabilize the country.
