Spain Official Hopeless on Iraq War

By Prensa Latina,

Madrid : Spanish Foreign Affairs Minister Miguel Angel Moratinos Monday said he was hopeless about the war in Iraq, “where everything is delicate.”

“The situation in that Arab country continues to be dramatic and unpredictable and it is unacceptable that the international community wakes up every day with those images of death and desolation,” said the minister in an interview published by Public daily on Monday.

Moratinos also called the US allied invasion of Iraq a strategic mistake and emphasized that there is currently more instability, violence and terrorism in Iraq and the whole region as a result of the war.

Regarding the situation in Afghanistan, where Spanish military forces are stationed under the United Nations command, Moratinos admitted that the conflict in that country cannot be solved by force.

“Military strategy is not enough, rather a political strategy and a global approach are needed,” upheld the minister.

However, he ratified the presence of the Spanish soldiers in the Afghan territory and stated that their withdrawal from that country could take several years.
