New Delhi : Intense heat wave conditions continued in central India even as the national capital and many parts of northern plains witnessed over-40 degrees Celsius temperatures.
The maximum temperature in Delhi Wednesday was 40.2 degrees Celsius and millions braced themselves for a hot summer season. The day’s low was 24.5 degrees Celsius, at least three degrees above normal.
In most parts of northern plains, it was a hot, sunny day. Jaipur, Chandigarh, Lucknow and Patna -all saw the mercury crossing over 40 degrees during the day.
Searing heat wave conditions prevailed over central parts of India. Nagpur and Jalgaon in eastern Maharashtra recorded the maximum temperatures of 44.2 degrees Celsius. Nagpur, known for its hot summers, is expected to see the mercury rising up to 45 degrees Celsius towards the month-end and even cross the 46-degree mark in May, a regional meteorological centre official said.
The Met Office in its bulletin has said that the maximum temperatures in the northwest and central parts of the country are expected to increase by 1-2 degrees Celsius over the next few days.
“Conditions are favourable for scattered to fairly widespread rain or thundershowers over Assam, Meghalaya and Arunachal Pradesh during April 24 to 27,” the bulletin said.
The weather office also said that a cyclonic circulation over the south Andaman Sea could lead to rain in the southern peninsula from April 25.
The following were the maximum and minimum temperatures and rainfall in major cities for the 24 hours till Sunday morning, with figures in brackets denoting deviations from the average.
