Hockey chief Gill in no mood to quit

By IANS,

New Delhi : Despite pressure from the sports ministry, Indian Hockey Federation (IHF) chief K.P.S Gill made it clear Thursday that he was in no mood to relinquish the position he has been holding for last 15 years.

Unperturbed by criticisms following the men’s team’s failure to qualify for the Olympics for the first time in 80 years and a sting operation showing IHF general secretary K. Jothikumaran taking bribe to fix team selection, Gill said he had not taken note of Sports Minister M.S. Gill’s advice and would continue at the helm of affairs.

“I will not quit as IHF president. I have not taken note of the sports minister’s advice,” he told the NDTV news channel.

In the wake of the bribery scandal, the sports minister had asked the former top cop to review his position in the IHF.

“In full consideration of the situation facing the Indian hockey, and the national need, I urge him to consider withdrawing from his current responsibility. It is time to let other Indians make an attempt to lift our hockey,” the minister had said in a statement earlier this week.
