India-Myanmar border liaison meeting begins

By IANS,

New Delhi : Military delegations of India and Myanmar Thursday began their biannual six-day border liaison meeting that will focus on issues like cross-border insurgency, arms smuggling and border management.

The first round of discussions was held at Rangapahar in Nagaland. The 15-member visiting delegation then reached Kolkata, where its leader, Brig. Gen. Tin Maung Ohn will Friday call on Lt. Gen. V.K. Singh, the General Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Eastern Command.

Thereafter, the delegation will hold the second round of deliberations with the Indian team led by Lt. Gen. P.K. Goel, the chief of staff of the Eastern Command.

The border liaison meetings, which are in their 32nd edition, “will go a long way in ushering a closer bonding between the two neighbours. The next meeting between the two sides is scheduled to be held in Myanmar later this year”, a defence ministry statement said.

The Indian states of Manipur, Nagaland, Mizoram and Arunachal Pradesh share international borders with Myanmar.
