IAEA Deplores Israeli Attack on Syria

By Prensa Latina,

Vienna : International Atomic Energy Agency Director General Mohamed El Baradei condemned Israel ó s bombing last September of alleged secret nuclear facilities in Syria.

Referring on Friday to the Israeli bombing of September 6, El Baradei said that unilateral use of force undermines the verification process, which is the basis of the non-proliferation regimen.

The Egyptian official strongly criticized the US for retaining data about the supposed Syrian atomic facility, of which El Baradei was notified just yesterday, coinciding with a Congressional hearing..

Thursday the CIA presented what it considered documentary evidence of the alleged atomic center, collected by satellite after the air attack.

El Baradei complained that such information was not provided on time to IAEA, in line with its jurisdiction under the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty.

The IAEA also referred to reports that the Syrian reactor was not in operation and no material had been put into it.

IAEA should have the possibility to verify the veracity of the information and establish the facts, a communiqué from the Vienna-based body asserts.

On the other hand, the US avoids any repudiation of Israel, which is said to have over one hundred nuclear weapons, developed since the 80s, according to local media.
