Karzai safe after firing incident

By KUNA,

Kabul : Afghan President Hamid Karzai came on state television to tell his countrymen that he is safe after a firing incident during a ceremony he was attending with his cabinet members Sunday morning.

A statement was also released from the Presidential Palace saying that the president was unharmed. However, it said two MPs have suffered injuries but did not say whether their injuries were actually caused by the firing.

Appearing on the official TV channel, President Karzai said those who disrupted the ceremony were “enemies of Afghanistan.” He said six of them had been arrested while their nefarious designs were thwarted by the security agencies.

The Afghan president left the Mujahideen Day ceremony in Kabul after automatic weapon firing came from a nearby house.

Taliban spokesman Zabeehullah Mujahid also said rockets were fired from a nearby mountain. However, police officials on the scene only said automatic weapon fire came from a nearby house.

Earlier, Defense Ministry spokesman Gen. Zahir Azimi had also told reported injury of two Afghan MPs and said the president was “safe”.
