New Delhi : India thrashed Singapore 3-0 in the Asia-Oceania Junior Davis Cup tennis tournament at the DLTA complex here Monday.
Saurabh Singh gave India the lead in the first singles when he routed Han Felix Wee 6-0,6-0 in mere 37 minutes .Wee had no answer to Singh’s impeccable display.
Yuki Bhambri too had no problem outplaying Chenjie Dominic Boey and won the game 6-0,6-0 in just 45 minutes.
The Singaporeans, however, came well in the doubles with duo of Dominic Boey and Ching Wei Justin Low giving the pair of Singh and Samip Mehta a good fight. But they could not maintain the tempo as the Indians won 7-5, 7-6 (6).
In the other matches, top seed Australia took a 2-0 lead over Kazakhstan after James Duckworth beat Denis Yeveseyev 6-4,6-0 and Maverick Banes bested Dinmukhammed Yessenkulov 6-4,6-1.
The seventh seeded Chinese Taipei, however, faced some tough challenge from Uzbek players before going up 2-0 against Uzbekistan.
Meanwhile, Barrett Franks and Ben McLachlan put New Zealand on top against Hong Kong, beating Siu Fai Lam 6-2,6-3 and Shing Fung Lui 6-1,6-1 respectively in the singles.
In the tie between Malaysia and fifth seed Philippines, Malaysian Marcus Chee Hong Yuan beat Akio Sy 3-6,6-3,7-5 in a marathon match that lasted more than two hours.
Thailand’s Chanon Varapongsttikul gave his country lead over Pakistan beating Faizan Khurram 7-6(7),6-2.
In clash between second seed Japan and Korea, Japanese Motoaki Kita beat Korean Ki-Hoon Kim 6-3,6-4.
Also, eight seed China beat Indonesia with Guan-Yu Cao defeating Gusti Jaya Kusum 6-7(2) 4-6 in a match that lasted for one hour and fifteen minutes.
The top two teams in each of the four groups will make it to the knock-out stage.
The top four teams from the zone will make it to the World Group final that would staged in Mexico from Sept 23-28
India seeded four have been clubbed with Singapore, Pakistan and Thailand and would face Pakistan Tuesday.
