Plight of Indian workers in the US raised in Lok Sabha (Lower House)

By NNN-PTI,

New Delhi : The plight of several Indian workers in the US was raised in the Lok Sabha (Lower House) today with a CPI-M member demanding that the government talk to Washington so that problems of the aggrieved people could be addressed.

Raising the issue during Zero Hour, P Karunakaran said there were cases of exploitation of these workers sent to the US by recruitment agents.

The workers have been recruited by agents in this country through advertisements and “this is a serious situation,” the MP said.

He said they had gone there on H-2B visa, which is valid for ten months and can be cancelled any time.

Commenting on his observation, Speaker Somnath Chatterjee wondered what the Indian government could do here.

Chatterjee said at the most the government can restrain the recruiting agents.

The member agreed with him but also said that the government should take up the issue with US Ambassador to New Delhi David Mulford.

Besides, he called for strict curbs on agents to stop the malpractices in recruitment.
