Addis Ababa : The investiture of the new African Union Commission and newly elected President Jean Ping (of Gabon) was celebrated Monday in Addis Ababa, venue of the union.
Jean Ping, who replaces Alpha Umar Konare (of Mali), was chosen February 2.
During the investiture ceremony Ping said he is solemnly committed to make transparency and care of resources the cornerstone of his mandate as president of the AU.
AU is an organization of 53 African countries dedicated to increase economic and political integration and reinforce cooperation among its members.
The organization replaced Organization for the Unity of Africa in March 2001, with the signing of the Pact of Sirte, in Libya.
