Judges reinstatement issue threatens coalition in Pakistan

By KUNA,

Islamabad : The Musharraf-deposed Judges reinstatement has created serious rifts in the partnership of two Pakistani leading parties at the center as their talks over the issue have failed to break the impasse.

Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani Tuesday held meeting with President Pervez Musharraf and discussed with him the ongoing series of talks over the issue, official sources told KUNA.

They said though the talks covered discussion on the overall countrys situation but center of attention remained judges restoration talks between Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) and Pakistan Muslim League (PML-N), that have been entered into a deadlock and threatening their partnership.

PML-N had affixed its joining the government at the center to the restoration of all judges, being deposed by President Musharraf during his emergency rule to save his candidacy.

The deposed judges also include Chief Justice Ifitkhar Chauhdary who allowed PML-N leadership to end a decade of exile period and entry in the country as well as threatened to invalidate Musharrafs candidacy as the next President of Pakistan.

PML-N and PPP had agreed to restore judges by April 30th however, the signs of fulfilling the commitment are quite bleak. PPP and PML-N leadership Monday held talks in Dubai to resolve differences over the issue but talks mainly failed.

According to media reports, the deadlock was reportedly on linkage of the resolution for judges’ restoration in the parliament with the constitutional package for the judiciary, and the PPP was not ready to take the two, separately.

On the other hand, the PML-N also refused to get the two – resolution and constitutional package – linked and made it clear to the PPP that the resolution and the constitutional package were two separate things and both must be treated separately.

A political analyst Dr. Hina Akram here opined that the Judges issue has again plunged the country into political crisis amid power and wheat crisis are becoming deeper.

People have attached high hopes to the two parties have months of bloody suicide attacks and rampant attacks on security forces, she said, adding that to save the democracy in the country the two parties should resolve their differences as early as they could.
