Italians Protest Uruguay Killer Release

By Prensa Latina,

Rome : Representatives of the relatives of the 25 Italian citizens who disappeared during Operation Condor in South America, protested Tuesday at the release of former Uruguayan repressor Jorge Troccoli by an Italian court.

Cristina Mihura, spokeswoman of the victims families, asked the lawyers to consider a penal demand in Rome to investigate specific responsibilities.

Troccoli, a former agent of Uruguayan military intelligence, was arrested in Italy in December for human rights violations during the military dictatorship in his country.

He was waiting in Rome to be extradited to Uruguay, but was freed last week by an Italian appeals court, after the established time limit to keep him under arrest expired.

According to Mihura, the Montevideo extradition claim arrived in Italy incomplete and outside of the established time limit.

His arrest in Italy was part of a capture order ordered by an Italian judge against nearly 140 Latin American former soldiers implicated in cases of torture and disappeared people.

During Operation Condor in the 70s and 80s, thousands of people were murdered or missing in several countries of Latin America.
