SAARC summit helps reduce tension with Afghanistan — Pakistani PM

Islamabad : The South Asian Summit helped reduce tension with Afghanistan and dispelled many apprehensions between the two neighbors, Pakistani Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Razaa Gilani said Monday.

The premier was commenting after his return from Colombo where he attended the 15th South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) Summit.

The premier told reporters President Hamid Karzai of Afghanistan has assured him that he was ready to remove differences with Pakistan and that “if you take one step forward, we will take one thousand steps.” The official held a formal meeting with his Indian counterpart Manmohan Singh. He said he and his counterpart discussed all bilateral issues, including Kashmir.

He said both countries expressed a desire for peace and resolution of all issues.

He further said that Pakistan’s proposals at the SAARC meeting on food, energy, environment, and terrorism were highly appreciated and placed in the SAARC Declaration.
