Five kids injured as transformer explodes in Ghaziabad

By IANS,

Ghaziabad : Five children received severe burn injuries when an electrical transformer exploded in Ghaziabad Wednesday afternoon.

Four of them sustained over 70 percent burns and were stated to be in a critical condition.

According to eyewitnesses, the children were playing in a park in Sector 12 of Vijay Nagar when the transformer erected on a pole exploded at around 3.30 p.m. They said the explosion was so intense that its pieces were scattered several metres away.

The Uttar Pradesh Power Corporation had installed the transformer only a day before.

The injured children were immediately rushed to the District MMG Hospital. Three of them – Sagar, Sachin and Shefali – were referred to the GTB Hospital in Shahdara.

Shefali’s father Sunil Saxena said: “The transformer was repaired and installed only yesterday but still its oil was leaking. We had also complained about this leakage to the power corporation but nobody bothered. This incident was waiting to happen.”

Superintendent of Police (City) Vijay Bhushan said: “We have asked for the names of the officials responsible for the laxity. Strict action would be taken against them for negligence.”
