Agartala : Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) general secretary Prakash Karat has denied having said his party would never support the Congress in future.
“I have never said that the CPI-M would not support the Congress in future. I have said that the Left parties in future would not support a Congress-led government at the Centre,” Karat told party workers here.
He was addressing the 19th state conference of the Tripura unit of the CPI-M late Wednesday.
In an interview with the Malayalam channel Kairali TV last week, Karat had ruled out any future alliance with the Congress.
The CPI-M general secretary in the interview had stressed there would be no ties with the Congress.
The CPI-M-led Left parties, which have 59 MPs in the Lok Sabha, withdrew support to the Congress-led United Progressive Allianc (UPA) government over the India-US civil nuclear deal on July 9.
Karat urged party leaders to garner the support of more regional parties in the proposed third front to fight both the Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
“Targeting the ensuing Lok Sabha election, a relation has been established between the Left parties and the United National Progressive Alliance (UNPA). This is not the third alternative. Formation of a third alternative is in a distant future,” he said.
