Islamabad : Pakistani parliament is set to initiate mpeachment proceedings of President Pervez Musharraf’s on Monday.
Senior government leaders were in consultations in Islamabad to prepare a ‘charge-sheet’ against the President to be moved with a resolution in the National Assembly, Lower House of the Parliament.
National Assembly has been summoned to meet on Monday in the afternoon to start the proceedings.
Provincial assemblies will pass resolutions to ask President Musharraf to get vote of confidence, the move considered to put pressure on the President to resign before the impeachment motion is moved in the parliament.
The first vote of confidence will take place on Monday in Punjab’s assembly, where the two federal government coalition partners hold power, Chief Minister Punjab Shehbaz Sharif.
The three other provincial assemblies southern Sindh, southwest Baluchistan and North West Frontier will also pass similar resolution before the motion is passed in the Parliament.
Khwaja Asif, a central of Muslim League-N party, says that impeachment process will complete by August 27.
Some government and opposition leaders believe that President Musharraf would resign before the impeachment resolution is tabled for voting in the parliament. But few opposition leaders are asking Musharraf to face the motion and that they would defend him.
The Information Minister said Sunday that the coalition enjoys support of 340 legislators in the 442-member parliament, and 295 are required to get passed the impeachment motion with two-thirds numbers in the two houses parliament.
“Musharraf is losing support. I am confident that even his allies in the PML party will throw weight behind the impeachment when a battle between democracy and dictatorship comes,” Sherry Rehman said.
She said the coalition partners have collected enough evidence to frame a string case in the parliament for impeachment.
