Thousands in Tbilisi protest Russian bombardment

By DPA,

Tbilisi (Georgia) : Several thousand people took to the streets in Tbilisi Sunday evening to protest the Russian bombardment and show solidarity with Georgia as the neighbours clashed over the breakaway province of South Ossetia.

About 3,000 people gathered in the streets to show support for the Georgian military, eyewitnesses said. Supports of Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili waved the country’s flag and carried signs reading “Stop Russia”.

After nearly four days of fighting between Georgian and Russian troops in the breakaway region of South Ossetia Russian troops were in control of the capital Tskhinvali Sunday, as the Georgian government announced a unilateral ceasefire.

Even as the withdrawal of Georgian forces from the South Ossetian capital Tskhinvali was confirmed by the Russian military, there were reports of continued fighting including the sinking of several Georgian warships and an attack by Russian jets on Tbilisi’s airport.
