Baghdad : Two US soldiers were killed and two others were injured in a suicide attack north of the capital, the US military said.
It said in a statement Sunday that 21 Iraqis including three Iraqi officers were injured.
The US military said that one of its patrols headed to Al-Tarimiya town, 40 km north of Baghdad, and an improvised bomb exploded upon its arrival killing one soldier.
After the explosion, a suicide bomber wearing an explosive belt detonated his explosive which was followed by armed fire, killing another US soldier and injuring two others.
Fifteen Iraqi civilians and three Iraqi officers and three from the Al-Sahwa “Awakening” force were also injured, the statement said.
US Lt-Col Steve Stover, a US military spokesman in Baghdad, said the attacks were carried out by Al-Qaeda elements against an Iraqi family, which was followed by another attack on civilians. “Terrorists would do anything to disrupt progress and instigate sectarian violence,” Stover said.
The attacks were down to around four a day on average, compared to 40 a day in June last year and 10 earlier this year, Stover added.
