At least 2 killed in police firing in Greater Noida

By IANS,

Greater Noida (Uttar Pradesh) : At least two people were killed here Wednesday when the police opened fire at a farmers’ mob that was demanding ‘adequate compensation’ for land acquired by the government.

The farmers’ demonstration turned violent at about 1.30 p.m. following which the police resorted to a baton-charge. But, it failed to check the violence.

The police then opened fire in which at least two people were killed. However, unofficial figures put the death toll at seven.

About 45 people were injured including about a dozen police personnel. The mob damaged a dozen vehicles including two police jeeps, a civil official’s car and a tractor.

About 2,000 farmers had gathered at the Greater Noida office to press for their demand that the compensation awarded for land acquired by the government in previous years be at par with the prevailing rate. They wanted the compensation for the land acquired in 2003 and 2005 to be equal to the rate of compensation awarded in 2008.
