Attari border (Punjab) : Pakistani and Indian border security forces Thursday exchanged sweets to mark Pakistan’s Independence Day even as peaceniks from both sides were getting ready for a candlelight vigil near this joint border checkpost.
Officials of the Pakistan Rangers offered sweets to Indian Border Security Force (BSF) officials at this checkpost at Attari-Wagah between both countries, 30 km from Amritsar, to mark the anniversary of Pakistan’s creation.
Pakistan was created Aug 14, 1947, as an Islamic state while India gained its independence a day later on Aug 15.
Later Thursday night, activists of the India-Pakistan Dosti Manch (friendship forum) will organize their annual candlelight vigil at the border checkpost.
Noted journalist Kuldip Nayyar and several other prominent personalities are expected to come for the candlelight vigil.
Though the vigil from the Indian side is done every year Aug 14-15 night, some activists from the Pakistan side are also expected to turn up at the border for the first time.
