Hundreds court arrest in Jammu

By IANS,

Jammu : Hundreds of people courted arrest here Monday as the Shri Amarnath Yatra Sangharsh Samiti (SAYSS), leading the seven-week-old campaign demanding return of land to the Amarnath shrine management, intensified its agitation.

The Samiti has given a call of Jail Bharo or ‘court arrest’ campaign for three days beginning Monday.

Samiti convenor Leela Karan Sharma led the first batch of people who courted arrest at the Rehari crossing, while other leaders led several hundred people in other areas like Bakshi nagar, Parade Ground, City Chowk and Pacca Danga in courting arrest.

Slogans hailing Lord Shiva, to whom the Himalayan cave shrine of Amarnath in Kashmir is devoted, rent the air.

Volunteers were peaceful and many of them carried tricolours.

The police refused to give the exact number of people who had courted arrest so far, saying details would be known by later Monday.

Monday’s demonstrations by the Samiti’s male supporters will be followed by women on Tuesday and children on Wednesday, Brig. Suchet Singh, a senior Samiti leader, said Sunday.
