MEA issued notice on plea of Iranian embassy’s sacked official

By IANS,

New Delhi : The Delhi High Court Monday issued notice to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on a plea of a dismissed Iranian embassy official to grant him an order directing the embassy to pay him compensation of Rs.789,000.

A lower court in its order last November asked the Iranian embassy to pay Rs.789,000 with nine percent annual interest for removing him from service six years ago.

Issuing notice to the Ministry of External Affairs, Justice Rekha Sharma sought its response by Aug 21 on the petition of Syed Ashraf Hasnain Rizvi, who worked in the science and education section of the embassy.

Rizvi sought direction to the MEA to grant him sanction for execution of the court’s order of Nov 14 last year.

The Iranian embassy terminated the services of Rizvi on May 15, 2002, by an oral communication without giving any reason. He was working with the embassy since Oct 1, 1989.

In January 2004, Rizvi was granted permission by the MEA to file a suit against the embassy. The district court awarded him the compensation amount after the embassy filed its written replies.

As mandatory under the statute, Rizvi again approached the MEA for sanction to execute the decree against the embassy but this time the MEA rejected his plea in April.

He moved the high court against the MEA’s denial of the sanction to him.
