Man returns home after spending 20 years in Pakistan jail

By IANS,

Lucknow : A mentally unstable man has returned to his Uttar Pradesh village after spending 20 years in a Pakistan jail, officials said Tuesday.

Vishwanath, a native of Rasoolpur village in Azamgarh district, was found by the Rajasthan police near the international border Aug 14.

“The Rajasthan police team approached us after getting some information about his native place,” inspector S.B. Rai of Bardah police station informed IANS.

Vishwanath was brought to his native village late Monday.

Vishwanath however has become mentally unstable, allegedly due to torture, and was not able to tell the location of the jail where he was lodged, Rai added.

The police said that Vishwanath might have been released, along with some other prisoners, as part of the Independence day celebrations of Pakistan Aug 14.

According to Vishwanath’s father, Okai, he left home about 20 years ago to search for a job. He was 23 years old at that time.

“Vishwanath told us that he went to Rajasthan and was caught by some uniformed men from a deserted place,” Rai added.

“It is possible that he crossed the international border and was caught by the Pakistan army, the Rajasthan police team informed us.”

Vishwanath was handed over to his father.

“We are very happy to get Vishwanath back as he is our only child,” Okai said.
