Dhaka : American doctors attending to former Bangladesh prime minister Sheikh Hasina have said that her poor vision and blood pressure problems as well as allergies are the result of a grenade attack on her rally here four years ago.
“The US doctors said that three of the complications except for the hearing problem are late consequences of the grenade attack,” Hasina’s personal physician Modasser Ali told The Daily Star newspaper.
Hasina is currently undergoing treatment in the US, which Ali oversaw before returning here.
Ali added that Harry A. Quigley, director of the Wilmar Eye Institute at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland, had said that some of the damage caused by the explosion might be permanent.
“Hasina has little hope of regaining hearing in her left ear as it is damaged totally. She can hear normally with the hearing aid in her right ear, but she can’t stand it for over two hours,” Ali said.
Hasina has lost 20 percent of her vision in her left eye and it might need surgery soon, he said, adding that her right eye is working alright, but both her eyes have compression.
“The doctors in the US told me that her blood pressure also fluctuates as a result of the late consequence of the grenade attack.
“Her allergic complications developed from the grenade splinters still in her body. Splinters contain various chemicals and these can trigger different sorts of complications,” Ali said.
Ali, an ophthalmologist, told reporters earlier this week that he planned to go to court against the present caretaker government for negligence and deliberate delay in getting treatment for Hasina, who had been in jail on graft charges since July 2007.
He also wants to sue the ministers of former prime minister Khaleda Zia’s government, during whose tenure the attack took place, killing 22 and injuring about 100.
